Every morning, I rely on my bike and public transit to get to work at Seaspan North Vancouver. I take the early shuttle to catch the West Coast Express, then bike the rest of the way. Riding my bike not only keeps me active but also helps reduce my carbon footprint.
As the mornings grow darker, I’ve stopped biking from home to the station for safety reasons. Instead, I take the shuttle at 5:40 AM. One driver was kind enough to let me bring my bike inside since bike racks aren’t allowed to be used in the dark. However, on a different morning, another driver refused both options—he wouldn’t let me place my bike on the rack or bring it inside—leaving me stranded with no way to reach the station.
Frustrated by the inconsistency, I emailed TransLink to clarify the rules. Their response confirmed that while bike racks are off-limits in the dark for safety reasons, bikes are allowed inside the shuttle if space permits. Since I’m often one of only two or three passengers at that time, there should be no issue.
I hope this clarification reaches all drivers so that I, and others who rely on bikes for their commute, can travel smoothly. Promoting cycling-friendly policies benefits not just individuals like me but also helps encourage a greener, healthier way to commute.
